'''''Sailor Moon the novel 1: A Scout is Born''''' was a book published by [[TokyoPop|Mixx Readz]] in April 1999 in [[Sailor Moon in North America|the USA]]. The novel was a retelling of [[Crybaby Usagi's Magnificent Transformation|episode 1]], [[Punish Them! The House of Fortune is the Youma Mansion|episode 2]], and [[Mysterious Sleeping Illness! Protect the Girls' Hearts in Love|episode 3]] from the [[Sailor Moon (anime)|original Japanese anime]], though it used the English dub names. The storyline was the same as in the anime, though some new dialogue was added.

The novel had twelve chapters, and each anime episode was covered in four chapters. It was told in third person by an omniscient narrator, but only [[Usagi Tsukino|Serena]]'s thoughts were told.

* In the novel [[Gurio Umino|Melvin]]'s last name was given as "Grier" instead of Butlers, his last name in the [[Sailor Moon in North America#English Dub|English dub]].

*[[Motoki Furuhata|Andrew]] had the last name "Foreman" in the novel, though he was never given one in the dub. [[Yuuji Kimura]] never had any dub name, but was given the name Tim House.

* Five of [[Usagi Tsukino|Serena]]'s female classmates were given full names: June Chin, Kim Matthews, Lisa Brownridge, Rica Kelton, and Tina Marin. 

* The male teacher from the episode [[Punish Them! The House of Fortune is the Youma Mansion]], whom the rebellious boys throw stones after, was named Mr. Olsen.

* All three [[Monster-of-the-day|Monsters-of-the-day]] were nameless and referred to as "witches".

* The presenter "[[Jadeite|Jay Dight]]" of the radio program [[Midnight Zero]] had received a love letter from a "Carrie in Northridge". This was possibly a reference to the city of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northridge,_Los_Angeles,_California Northridge, California], where the author [[Stu J. Levy]] was born and founded the company [[TokyoPop]]. 

* As episode 2 was skipped by the original English dub of ''Sailor Moon'', this novel is the first official North American depiction of its narrative.
