Sailor Jupiter is the fifth and last senshi discovered by the moon cats in 20th Century Tokyo. Her civilian identity is Makoto Kino or Lita in the dub.
She lives alone in an apartment in Tokyo.
Powers
Sailor Jupiter is the strongest of the inner senshi both in terms of attacks and physical strength. She is also the tallest, and because of her height she must wear a different school uniform (actually the uniform of her previous school before her transferral) from the other girls while a student at Juuban Municipal Junior High School, as they did not have her size available.
Transformations
- Jupiter Power, Make Up - Uses her first transformation pen to transform into Sailor Jupiter.
- Jupiter Star Power, Make Up - Uses her Star Power Stick to transform into Sailor Jupiter.
- Jupiter Crystal Power, Make Up - Uses her Crystal Change Rod to transform into a super version of Sailor Jupiter.
Attacks
- Supreme Thunder - Sailor Jupiter's main attack. She sends bolts of electricity that are collected by her tiara.
- Supreme Thunder Dragon - A more powerful version of Supreme Thunder that was in the shape of a dragon. This attack was only used once, in the R season
- Sparkling Wide Pressure - Sailor Jupiter's upgraded attack that first appeared in the R season. A ball of electricty is thrown from her hands.
- Jupiter Coconut Cyclone - Sailor Jupiter uses this attack in both the manga and video games.
- Jupiter Oak Evolution - Sailor Jupiter's attack that first appeared in the SuperS season. Sailor Jupiter sends balls of energy at her opponent. Unlike previous attacks which have an electricity basis in tune with her association with the Roman God of Thunder, Jupiter, this attack matches with the association of trees (木) in the Japanese writing of Jupiter (木星).
Personal life
Before moving to Juuban Middle School, Makoto bounced from school to school, often having to leave due to violence.
Makoto is an excellent cook. Her celestial alliance with Jupiter, or mokusei (木星) in Japanese, indicates an inclination toward botany as well.
Depending on the series her dream is to either be the owner of a sweets shop or a flower shop.
Makoto constantly references an "old flame" of hers. The phrase she uses in Japanese is shitsurenshita senpai (失恋した先輩). Shitsuren shita means broken heart or unrequited love, while senpai is an senior student (for school) or colleague (at work); in other words, an older boy she was in love with. Throughout the series she makes constant references both to the boy himself, as well as an ideal of senpai for a romatic relationship. (See, for example, Episode 159, Chibiusa's Little Rhapsody of Love where Sailor Mars comments on this.)
In the story Parallel Sailor Moon, she achieves her dream of running a bakery/flower shop, and has a daughter with an unseen man. It is stated that she lived with her husband for two years before marrying him. She is very happy.
Family
According to the manga, all known family are deceased. The anime never states this explicitly, but no family members are ever mentioned.
In the story Parallel Sailor Moon, she is married to an unseen gentleman, and has a daughter, Mako, who is also a Senshi.
Costume
Sailor Jupiter's primary color is green, with a pink bow. She wears rose earrings.
Trivia
- Jokes about Makoto's "Talent" are often made by fans. This is a reference to the DiC dub episode 50 Mirror, Mirror on the Wall (56, Steal Mamoru's Kiss! An's Snow White Strategy) where Lita says she should play the part of Snow White because she has more "talent," at the same time as her breasts are shown prominently (and "jumping" a bit) on the screen. In the original, she says outright that she should get the part because of her breasts.
- The source of Makoto's income has been a debate amongst fans for awhile. Even though she is only 14-15 years old in the anime series, it is never explicitly stated how she is able to support herself or if she even lives alone. It can be speculated that she lives on the fortune left by her parents.
- Amongst the Inner Senshi, Makoto/Sailor Jupiter is the strongest physical fighter (while Usagi/Sailor Moon would be the strongest in terms of magical power). However, in episode 96, Cold Hearted Uranus? Makoto in Trouble during the S Season, she and Haruka/Sailor Uranus engage in a scuffle which indicates that Haruka is even stronger still.
- Jupiter, her guardian planet, is the largest planet in the Solar System, and is notable for its turbulent weather (e.g. huge storms, lightening, etc.).
- The extra long skirt of her previous school's uniform worn during her junior high period, together with the style of her shoes, was a symbol of delinquent or gangster school girls at the time. However, her such costume was not reproduced in the live action series, probably because time had changed (when ultra-micro skirts were the standard of Kogaru - derived from "call girl" but not necessarily meaning prostitutes), and it was inappropriate for the show's target audience of small children.
