Moonlight Densetsu (ムーンライト伝説 ; "Moonlight Legend") was the opening theme song for the first four seasons of the Sailor Moon anime. "Sailor Star Song" replaced it as the opening theme during the Stars season, but it returned as the closing theme for the final episode. The song was also played during the final battle with Queen Beryl in episode 46.

Song Details

The song's lyrics were written by Kanako Oda, and the melody was composed by Tetsuya Komoro. Much of the melody was lifted from Chieko Baishou's "Sayonara wa Dance no Ato ni."

Versions

Two different versions of this song were used for the anime. The first, performed by DALI and arranged by Daisuke Ikeda, was used for the duration of the first season and Sailor Moon R. The second, performed by Moon Lips and arranged by Yuuzou Hayashi, was used for Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon SuperS. The basic melody was also used for the theme song in the English dub, as well as several other non-Japanese dubs.

Elena from Pretty Cast also performed a cover of the song on the Best Song Collection CD.

Anime Continuity

This song was one of several vocal tracks that also existed within the continuity of the anime. The song was sung by Usagi, Naru, and Umino in episode 7, by Usagi and Minako in episode 52, and by Usagi in the Sailor Moon S movie. It might have been the theme for the Sailor V movie, as it was heard during an advertisement for the production in episode 21. Even Fisheye was heard humming the tune in episode 137. A short instrumental version of the tune was played by Tuxedo Mask's Orgel.

English Translation

I'm sorry I'm not honest,
I can say it while I'm dreaming,
My thoughts are on the verge of overloading,
I want to see you right now
Moonlight makes me want to cry,
At midnight I can't call you,
But I'm so devoted, what should I do
My heart is a kaleidoscope

Ushered by the light of the moon
We meet again over and over
The sparkling lights of the constellations predict the whereabouts of love
Born on this same planet, a miracle romance.

Once again, on a weekend, we're together,
A happy ending granted by the gods,
The present, past, and future,
I'm completely devoted to you

That time when we met, that dear
Look I'll never forget
Among millions of stars I'll find you,
Coincidences becoming chances, I like this way of life

A strange miracle crosses over,
We meet again over and over
The sparkling lights of the constellations predict the whereabouts of love
Born on this same planet, a miracle romance.
Do you believe in it? A miracle romance.
