Ami finds out that somebody using the pen name "Mercurius" is always tied with her for first place in exam scores, and starts to wonder what kind of a person he is.

Ami shows her friends the national practice exam scores and points out that "Mercurius" is always keeping next to her. She thinks it might be a new kind of enemy trying to challenge her, but the others think she is over-analyzing.

Still, Ami can't help but wonder who this "Mercurius" is, and decides to go to even more exams to try and meet him. This obsession makes her friends think she is in love, but she firmly denies any such accusations, claiming that Mercurius is her rival.

Minako and the others decide to help Ami find out who Mercurius is. Usagi asks Umino if he knows anything about him, and it turns out that Mercurius is Umino's friend.

Meanwhile, Ami goes to a tutorial seminar, and falls asleep because she has been working so hard. When she finally wakes up, she realises that class is over and heads home. On the way, she is ambushed by Bonnûn, a genius loci who preys on others' desires. Bonnûn attaches herself to Ami and begins feeding on her desire to meet Mercurius. At the same time, Umino and the girls go to meet Mercurius at his seminar.

The next morning, Ami is sick in bed and can't move. She believes Mercurius is doing this to her. Bonnûn decides she is ready for the final stage, since she is haunted by her desires, and commences the Love Letter attack on her, causing her to forget all she has learned.

Mamoru, Usagi, and Chibiusa think something is wrong with Ami and go to check on her. They hear Ami's screaming from inside and force the door open. Just as they barge in, Ami recovers from the attack and accuses Bonnûn (whom she believes is Mercurius) of causing her sickness and playing a dirty game. She transforms into Sailor Mercury and destroys Bonnûn with the Mercury Aqua Mirage attack. After that, she states that she feels much better and immediately falls asleep.

When the other girls are discussing Mercurius, Ami sneaks up to them and asks if they saw him and what he is like. Usagi and Minako claim that he looks like the year's hottest young star, and Ami believes them, saying that's exactly what she imagined him to be like. Usagi says it's better than letting her know that Mercurius looked exactly like Umino. Makoto wonders why he used the name Mercurius, and Usagi explains that his name is Kurume Suri, which sounds like Mercurius when read backwards ("merukurisu").

The next day, Ami is shocked to find out that Mercurius is still in the rankings even though she thought he was the enemy she had destroyed. She decides she is going to continue to try and best Mercurius in the exams.

Episode Trivia

  • In spite of its short running time, an original music soundtrack was written specifically for this special, including a new cue for Ami's transformation.
  • This was the last animated incarnation of Naru and Umino.
