Kobayashi was a anime-only character who appeared in the SuperS season. He was a friend of Mamoru's who went to university and high school with Mamoru and their mutual friend Saori. He had a crush on Saori, but was aware that she had a crush on Mamoru, with whom Kobayashi felt he could not compete.

When he met Usagi and Chibiusa (who both introduced themselves as Mamoru's "girlfriends") he was even more dispirited, as he did not think Usagi and Mamoru's relationship was serious. He supported Saori in her endeavour to confess her love to Mamoru and give a gift. However, after Saori discovered how serious Usagi and Mamoru's relationship really was, Saori gave up on Mamoru and gave the gift, a tie, to Kobayashi instead.

Trivia

• Though his name was not changed in the North American dub he did aquire a nickname, "Kobe". Both the names Kobayashi and Kobe where used in the dub.
