In the anime, the seven rainbow crystals (or, nijizuishou) are seaperated sections of the Silver Crystal, or Ginzuishou which came apart when Queen Serenity stealed away the Dark Kingdom's greatest warriors, the Seven Great Youma, during the attack on the Moon Kingdom in the Silver Millennium. There is one of each color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. They were sealed into six humans and one cat, each of whom were eventually tracked and attacked by members of the Dark Kingdom. Once the crystals were removed from their bodies, the carriers would become the Great Youma they had the connection to. Sailor Moon was able to return them with her Moon Healing Escalation.

Not all of the rainbow crystals fell into the Dark Kingdom's hands; Tuxedo Kamen/Mamoru managed to get a hold of two of them. The Dark Kingdom seeks them to reawaken seven great shadow warriors that were sealed away in the past; Mamoru seeks them because of dreams that indicate they will help him find the Ginzuishou and regain his lost memories.

Zoicite challenges Mamoru to a fight for the rainbow crystals at the Star Light Tower in the Bay Area at 5PM. The Dark Kingdom captures all the crystals when Zoicite fools Mamoru into placing them on the floor. Usagi and Mamoru are trapped in an elevator and after discovering one another's identities, they face Ziocite. When Zoicite sends a sercet attack at Sailor Moon's back, Tuxedo Kamen takes the hit for her and dies. Sailor Moon crys a single tear which gathers the power of the rainbow crystals and reforms into the Ginzuishou.

The rainbow crystals do not exist in the manga. It is suggested that they were created to 'fill in' time for the anime episodes.
