In the anime adaptation of Sailor Moon, the seven rainbow crystals (nijizuishou) are separate sections of the Silver Crystal (Ginzuishou) which came apart when Queen Serenity sealed away the Dark Kingdom's greatest warriors, the Seven Great Youma, during the attack on the Moon Kingdom in the Silver Millennium. Their colors are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. They were sealed into six humans and one cat, each of whom were eventually tracked and attacked by members of the Dark Kingdom. Once the crystals were removed from their bodies, the carriers would become the Great Youma they had the connection with. Sailor Moon was able to return them to normal with her Moon Healing Escalation.

Not all of the rainbow crystals fell into the Dark Kingdom's hands; The Sailor Senshi and Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru managed to get hold of some. However, ultimately the minions of the Dark Kingdom got the crystals the Senshi possessed, so that Mamoru and the Dark Kingdom had all of them between them.

The Dark Kingdom seeks them to reawaken the Seven Great Youma, while Mamoru seeks them because of dreams that indicate they will help him find the Ginzuishou and regain his lost memories.

Zoicite challenges Mamoru to a fight for his rainbow crystals at the Star Light Tower in the Bay Area at 5PM. The result of such a fight would be either Mamoru or the Dark Kingdom possessing all seven. The Dark Kingdom captures all the crystals when Zoicite fools Mamoru into placing them on the floor. Usagi and Mamoru are trapped in an elevator. After discovering each other's identities, they face Ziocite. When Zoicite sends a sercet attack at Sailor Moon's back, Tuxedo Mask takes the hit for her and dies. Sailor Moon cries a single tear which gathers the power of the rainbow crystals and reforms into the Ginzuishou.

The rainbow crystals do not exist in the manga. It is suggested that they were created to 'fill in' time for the anime episodes.
