Sailor Moon was the protagonist of the Sailor Moon series. Her civilian identity was Usagi Tsukino ("Serena" in the first English dub, and "Bunny" in many other countries). She was the second Senshi to be awakened by the moon cats, and was the only character to appear in every episode of the series. Over the course of the series, she grew from a frightened heroine unsure of herself and her abilities into a brave fighter for love and justice.

In all versions of the series, she referred to herself as the "Sailor-Suited Pretty Girl Soldier of Love and Justice" (愛と正義のセーラー服美少女戦士). In the manga, she was also entitled "Soldier of Mystery" (神秘の戦士) by Neo-Queen Serenity.

Costume

Sailor Moon in the anime
  • Sailor Moon (Classic, R) - She had a crescent moon insignia on her red choker, the tops of her boots, and also had her transformation brooch in the center of her front bow. Her dominant color was blue (collar and skirt) and her accent color was red (bows, boots, gloves, and choker). Her boots were knee-high red with a white border at the triangular top. The gem in her tiara was red. Her collar had two white stripes. Her earrings were dangling crescent moons. She wore two white-bordered red circular accents on her odango. By the S season the jewel in Sailor Moon's tiara was crescent-moon-shaped, the crescent moon on her choker became a heart, and her brooch changed to a more heart-like shape.
  • Super Sailor Moon - In the second half of the S season and all of the SuperS season, her fuku almost completely changed. She was then known as Super Sailor Moon. In the front of hair were two wing-like barrettes. Her earrings were no longer dangling moons, but were simply crescent moons affixed to her ears. Her choker became yellow with a red heart. The stripes on her collar were yellow, while the collar itself became dark blue. Her shoulder pads were translucent and shaped more wing-like. The back waist bow was long, white, and billowy. In SuperS, the back bow's length slightly decreased. The top of her skirt was adorned with a yellow belt and duplicate heart-shaped brooch, and the most obvious change by far was that her skirt was no longer blue, but white with a yellow and blue border at the bottom.
  • Eternal Sailor Moon - By the Stars season, almost nothing from Sailor Moon's original fuku remained the same. The tiara was gone, replaced by a crescent moon on her forehead. Her earrings had stars attached to the crescent moons. Her choker was red again, but it had a heart with a crescent moon on the bottom. The collar was changed into a darker blue with three yellow stripes. Her shoulder pads were large pink puffs with two patches of red fabric (the same as the fabric on the end of any fuku's gloves). The length of her gloves extended to her upper arms, wing-like clips were attached to the gloves, and attached to her wrists were chevron-shaped red bracelets with crescent moons. Gone also was the front bow, replaced with a wing-like design similar to the shape of the bow, and in the center was a yellow heart embraced by a crescent moon. Her belt was a thin red ribbon clipped on with a crescent moon. This belt also replaced her back waist bow, and it had two thin red ribbons streaming. Her skirt was three layers - yellow, red, and blue. Her boots were inverted; they were white, pointing down, with a red border and a crescent moon. She also wore large wings on her back. Some other more subtle differences were the lack of a "chest protector" (so to speak) under the front bow, and the absence of a white waist-belt above the skirt. The only part of her costume that did not change in any form was the odango covers.

Costume

  • Sailor Moon - Her costume was mostly similar to the anime version, though with a couple of differences. A clip similar to her transformation brooch was attached to the crescent moon on her choker. She had the wing-like barrettes from the start, her tiara had a more elaborate design, and her earrings were dangling five-pointed stars with crescent moons beneath them. Her collar had three white stripes instead of two. In her first appearances, she wore a white mask which she used to see images of people in danger, but in later Acts she would just throw it off after transforming. The mask last appeared in Act 17, where she used it to see through the disguises of Petz's Droids. Also, in some artbook illustrations, she had orange glove fittings and red gloves and shoulder pads, as well.
  • Super Sailor Moon - Her collar was blue in the front and yellow in the back, with the colors blending into each other over her shoulders. Instead of two different-colored stripes at the bottom of her skirt, the colors seemed to blend into each other, creating a subtle transition from yellow to blue.
  • Eternal Sailor Moon - Her choker had a V shape similar to the tops of her boots. The hearts on her transformation brooch and choker were the same pink as her sleeves; the latter were sometimes depicted as transparent in illustrations, and other times opaque. Although she had red chevron-shaped wristbands, they often did not appear in illustrations.

Costume

In the Bandai run of the musicals, Sailor Moon wore three different versions of her sailor fuku: the first one corresponded with her original form, the second with her Super Sailor Moon form, and the third with her Eternal Sailor Moon form. In many musicals she would transform into the first version, then later into the second, and into the third at the end, in contrast to the anime or manga, where once she gained a powered-up form she never was seen in a previous one again.

  • Sailor Moon - In most versions of this costume, Sailor Moon's bows, bottom skirt, glove fittings, choker, and boots were a dark pink, while her collar and top skirt were blue. At first her sleeves were pink, but later versions of the costume had blue sleeves. The first version of her brooch was a gold star with pink gems, and another version had a heart-shaped brooch similar to the Cosmic Heart Compact, but most of them had a similar design to her first brooch in other incarnations of the series. She had a golden crescent moon in the center of her choker and two crescent moons on the tops of her boots, and golden crescent moon earrings, and sometimes had wing-shaped barrettes in her hair, similar to those worn by Super Sailor Moon. The odango covers were a sparkling red. In the original version of the costume all of the trim and the stripes on her collar were gold, but in later versions the gold was replaced by pink with gold accents. In La Reconquista, her bows, bottom skirt, glove fittings, choker, and boots were red, while her collar and top skirt were blue. In this version, her sleeves were white with red ornamentation. The front bow and part of the fuku had gold trim, while the top skirt had light blue trim.
  • Super Sailor Moon - This version of the costume was almost identical to her Super form from the manga and anime. Her front bow, glove fittings, and boots were pink, her collar was blue, and her sleeves and back bow were silver. In one musical her skirt had three layers, the top one silver, the middle one gold, and the bottom one blue; but later it only had two layers, the top one silver and the bottom one blue. She wore silver wing-like barrettes in her hair. The brooch in the center of her front bow was heart-shaped and trimmed in gold. Unlike the manga and anime, her tiara gem did not change into a crescent moon, and remained a red gem in the center. The trim on her skirts, bow, sleeves, and the main body of the costume in the first version was silver, but the collar stripes and the trim on the main body of the later versions of the costume was gold. In Un Nouveau Voyage, her boots were red, her front bow and glove fittings were red with gold trim, and her collar was blue with gold trim. Her top skirt was white with a wide gold stripe at the bottom edge, the bottom skirt was dark blue, and she wore a light pink petticoat beneath. Her sleeves and back bow were a transparent glittery pink with pink trim. Her choker was gold with a pink gem, and her tiara gem was a crescent moon.
  • Eternal Sailor Moon - This version of the costume was almost identical to her Eternal form from the manga and anime. The sleeves, glove fittings, and wristbands were pink, and the "wings" on her glove fittings were gold. Her choker was pink with gold edges, but it had a golden heart instead of a crescent moon in the center. The wings on her chest were silver, and in the center, she had a pink heart-shaped brooch with silver wings on the sides, similar in design to the Crisis Moon Compact. She had two belts above her skirt, one gold and one pink, with a crescent moon in the center. Her skirt had three layers, gold on the top, then pink in the middle, and blue on the bottom. Her boots changed to white with red borders at the tops. Her earrings were large dangling crescent moons with five-pointed stars underneath them. At first she had a crescent moon on her forehead in place of a tiara, but in later versions of the costume, she wore her usual tiara instead. She wore white feathered wings, the exact design of which varied from musical to musical.

Video Games

Powers

In the video games in which she appeared, Sailor Moon used the powers standard to her appearances in other versions of canon, but the following are powers unique only to the video games.

Attacks

  • Sonic Cry - Used in the video games Sailor Moon S: Jougai Rantou!? Shuyaku Soudatsusen and Sailor Moon SuperS: Zenin Sanka!! Shuyaku Soudatsusen.

Trivia

  • Her civilian given name (うさぎ; Usagi) means "rabbit," and her family name (月野; Tsukino) is a homophone of the phrase "of the moon" (月の), making her name a pun referring to the Japanese legend of the "rabbit of the moon."
  • Her pigtails give an impression of a rabbit's (albeit elongated) ears.
