Sailor Chi ("Chi" (X) pronounced as "kai") was one of the Sailor Senshi subservient to Sailor Galaxia. She appeared only briefly in the manga, but nevertheless had an important impact upon the story. She also made appearances in some of the musicals, though there she played only a minor role. She will also appear in Sailor Moon Crystal.
Manga[edit]
In terms of hierarchy, it was made clear in the manga that both Sailor Chi and Sailor Phi were the two most loyal of Sailor Galaxia's followers, and were hence second only to her in Shadow Galactica. They were in charge of overseeing the cultivation of the Star Seed-trapping Garden Crystals that surround Galaxia's cathedral, as well as overlooking the operations of the Sailor Animamates on Earth. While Chi was not seen as often as Phi is, there was no doubt that she was still in a position of high power, as she was shown directly reporting to Galaxia on one occasion.
Phi and Chi were also arguably the strongest of Galaxia's followers; this was shown in full force during Act 56 and Act 57, where they killed six Sailor Senshi between them. Sailor Lethe and Sailor Mnemosyne were the first to fall to them, as a result of their treachery, then the Sailor Starlights were also killed in front of Sailor Moon and Princess Kakyuu.
During the final battle between Phi and Chi and the remaining Sailor Senshi, Sailor Chi avenged Phi's death and the destruction of the Garden Crystals by stabbing Sailor Kakyuu through the back with her staff. After Kakyuu died in Sailor Moon's arms, Sailor Moon killed Sailor Chi.
Musicals[edit]
Sailor Chi appeared in several Sera Myu productions: Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, played by Kaori Ishikawa; Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban), played by Sachiko Akimoto; and Eien Densetsu, its revision, and Shin Densetsu Kourin, played by Mari Yasuda.
In all their musical appearances, Sailor Chi, Sailor Phi, and Sailor Theta were Galaxia's foot troops: indistinguishable, rarely given dialogue, and subservient to the higher-ranking members of Shadow Galactica. There was no indication that they had a special role as Star Gardeners. Sailor Chi's outfit had red highlights, and she had green hair.
In Sailor Stars, Sailor Chi used the alias of Shadow Mantis while working under MC Fly. However, in Sailor Stars (Kaiteiban), she was simply called Sailor Chi. Also in the Kaiteiban, Sailor Chi (along with Phi and Theta) disguised herself as a backup dancer for the Three Lights while on Earth.
In Eien Densetsu, Sailor Chi disguised herself as a Juuban Municipal High School student. She had a shared attack with Sailor Phi and Sailor Theta, "Galactica Cry." After being beaten by Queen Beryl in combat, Sailor Chi was destroyed by Galaxia for her failure.
Trivia[edit]
- While it is a popular speculation amongst fans that Sailors Chi and Phi were twins, it was never actually confirmed anywhere, not even in the Materials Collection, where such information would have been pertinent to mention, such as in the case of Sailor Lethe and Sailor Mnemosyne.
- Sailor Chi is often incorrectly identified as "Sailor X," due to the "Χ" in her Japanese name. The letter "X" stands for the Greek letter "chi," hence the name "Chi" and not "X."
