Amaterasu

Amaterasu (天照; shining in the sky) is the goddess of the sun in Japanese legend and possibly the most important Shinto deity.

Amaterasu in the Sailor Moon Series

• Naoko Takeuchi based some of Sailor Moon's traits on the traits associated with Amaterasu, namely life-giving light.

• Takeuchi also based the three talismans of Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto (the Space Sword, Deep Aqua Mirror, and Garnet Orb, respectively) on the three symbols associated with Amaterasu and the royalty of Japan: the sword, mirror, and jewels.

• One of Ail and An's Cardians was named "Amaderasu," and she drew her powers from light and the sun.
